Take a motorized canoe to your base camp in the midst of the Amazon. Just over 15% of the Amazon rainforest is in Peru, covering about half the country.
Day 3 Amazon landmarks

Almost two billion acres large, the Amazon boasts over 2.5 million species of insects but does not stop there. Thousands upon thousands of fish, birds, mammals & reptiles also live here, making the Amazon home to more life than any other place in the world. Today spend your day exploring this land. Options may include Monkey Island, Observation Tower, Tres Chimbadas, or more.
Day 4 Puerto Maldonado--Cuzco

Enjoy a Walking Tour of Cusco and take in many Inca remains, charming streets and the colonial section of the city. See how the multiple cultures of the area collide, with sometimes surprising results.
Details: Cusco Cathedral
The Cusco Cathedral houses a an excellent collection of colonial art as well as archeological artifacts and relics. Symbols of the Incas can be found in the cathedral, such as a jaguar head carved into the cathedral doors.

The Plaza de Armas is Cusco's main square, and has been an important gathering spot since Incan times.
Details: Korikancha Temple
The Korikancha Temple was the most important temple in the Incan Empire. Once filled with golden statues and gold wallpaper, the Spanish described it as "fabulous beyond belief" when they saw it. The stone walls still stand today.

In 1680, the Convent of Santo Domingo was literally built on top of the Korikancha Temple.
Details: Pachamama ceremony experience
Partake in a traditional Pachamama ceremony, one of Peru's oldest and most sacred rituals. Dating back to pre-Inca days, the ceremony is an opportunity to connect with and give thanks to Mother Earth.
Day 5 Cuzco

Once a popular Incan trading post, the historic village of Pisac is now considered one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the country. Resting at the entrance to the Sacred Valley, the ruins contain an Incan cemetery, a residential settlement and ceremonial baths. A pink granite temple with ceremonial alters sits farther down the mountainside, and large agricultural terraces dot the steep hills. Every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, a large artisanal market draws crowds from nearby Cusco.
Day 6 Cuzco--Machu Picchu

A visit to a local school introduces you to Peruvian students. Learn the similarities and differences found in their classroom and the classroom you are accustomed to at home. (Please note that school visits will not be possible on certain dates due to schools not being in session. Explorica will update you as early as possible.)

The train passes through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to Aguas Calientes.
Day 7 Machu Picchu--Cuzco
Transfer back to Cuzco

Machu Picchu is a stunning complex of buildings clinging to the surrounding mountains and above the Urubamba River. Much of the extensive city is still intact, showcasing the agility and skill of Inca stone work. (Legend claims that the Inca knew of leaves that would dissolve rock, allowing them to meld stones together when building; birds in the surrounding jungle have been known to melt nesting holes in the mountains themselves, supporting the theory, but the leaves have not been identified.) Archaeologists disagree about the purpose of Machu Picchu -- many believe it was a country retreat, others think it may have been a university.
Day 8 Cuzco--Lima

Under the instruction of a professional chef, prepare, eat, and enjoy a traditional local dish.
Day 9 Lima landmarks
Details: Lima guided sightseeing tour
Experience the vibrant culture and breathtaking architecture of this capital city overlooking the Pacific Ocean. See the vast neo-colonial Governmental Palace, the towering Cathedral of Lima with its 14 side doors and main “door of forgiveness”, go past the upscale San Isidro district and visit the San Francisco Convent.
Details: Peruvian dance class
Guided by local professionals, participate in a traditional Peruvian dance class. You may learn one of the many traditional dances available: Afro Peruvian, folklore, salsa or Bachata.

Your flight home is overnight. You will return home on Day 10.
