Sarah L. took this stunning photo in Monte Cassino during her Italian Campaign tour. During World War II more than 200,000 soldiers of different nationalities fought in the decisive Battle of Monte Cassino as part of the larger Italian Campaign effort.
The Italian Campaign was a strategic military effort to capture Italy from Axis forces. Starting from the southern peninsula of Italy and moving north towards Rome, 93,000 Allied soldiers fought a 20-month battle in all weather conditions. Canadian casualties totalled more than 26,000 (of which 6,000 were fatal). Memorials have been built on or near significant battlefields in honour of these brave soldiers.
