The canal system was constructed to compensate for the dramatic drop in elevation between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie which created Niagara Falls. Stand on the shores of the great Welland Canal and watch as ships weighing up to 30,000 tonnes are lifted up and over the escarpments and into the Great Lakes.

Travel to Queenston Heights, the site of the 1812 Battle of Queenston Heights where Major-General Sir Isaac Brock was killed in the defense of Upper Canada (now Ontario) and see Brock’s Monument.
